WVU English professor develops year-long poetry workshop for high school students
Thanks to another generous donation from the Bolton family, local high school teachers have the opportunity to immerse their students in poetry through a workshop developed by Mary Ann Samyn, professor of English and director of the MFA program in creative writing at West Virginia University.
WVU chemistry department receives $1 million gift from C. Eugene Bennett Family Foundation
Thanks to a recent $1 million gift, the West Virginia University C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry will now be able to explore its options regarding the modernization of the general chemistry laboratories.
J. Edgar Hoover Foundation establishes scholarship in forensic science program
The J. Edgar Hoover Foundation has awarded a scholarship to West Virginia University to establish The J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Leadership Scholarship for students enrolled in the Department of Forensic and Investigative Science in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. This first-of-its-kind philanthropic gift from the Hoover Foundation will provide scholarships for four qualified students in the 2016-2017 academic year.
School of Social Work Professor Samuel Leizear appointed to state board
Samuel J. Leizear, Field Education Director for the School of Social Work, has been appointed to the State Family Protection Services Board (FPSB) by Governor Tomblin for 2016-2019. This Board is responsible for the approval, licensure and on-going monitoring of Family Protection Programs, Batterers Intervention and Prevention Program and Shelters.
Department of English Professor to retire
The Department of English will celebrate Professor Ellesa High’s retirement on Saturday, April 30 from 2:30-5:30 in 130 Colson Hall. A traditional native giveaway will be held at 3:00 p.m., followed by a potluck feast at 4:00. Carol Markstrom, Top Female Vocalist of the Year, Academy of Western Artists, along with Mother Earth Beat Drum will provide singing and drumming.
WVU Political Science Department to host John R. Williams Memorial Lecture
Renowned United States political behavior scholar Ismail White, Associate Professor of Political Science at The George Washington University, will be delivering the John R. Williams Lectureship in Political Science on April 29.
Phillips invited to present ethics research to NSF
West Virginia University Department of Political Science Associate Professor Trisha Phillips will present her research on promoting research integrity to the National Science Foundation on April 27.
WVU Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics hosts professor, students from Universidad de Guanajuato
Delegates from the Universidad de Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico visited the West Virginia University campus April 4-9 as part of a partnership with the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics.
Political science professor to host NSF sponsored research ethics workshop May 17-18
West Virginia University Political Science Associate Professor Trisha Phillips will host a workshop May 17-18 to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of scholars to discuss best practices in the design, review, and implementation of experimental research in response to recent news of research ethics scandals across the country to provide new opportunities for conversation about the issue.
Sociology and Anthropology to host rural health speaker April 14
The West Virginia University Department of Sociology and Anthropology will host Dr. Bill Mase, associate professor at the College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University for a lecture titled “Rural Communities Access to Healthcare Services: People Policy, and Poverty” April 14 at 3:30 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center.
