While some students travel home for spring break or take much needed vacations, others choose travel to regions of the world on coordinated study abroad opportunities.

The fifth annual national energy conference at West Virginia University will focus on the impacts of the global energy transition on coal communities in the state and Central Appalachia.

This April, the Africana Studies Program celebrates over 50 years of Head Start by hosting Penn State University historian, Dr. Crystal Sanders, who recently published A Chance for Change: Head Start and the Mississippi Freedom Struggle.

The West Virginia University Native American Studies program will host Ada Deer, renowned American Indian rights activist who was the first woman to serve as Chair of the Menominee Tribe and the first woman to be appointed Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs. Her effective tribal leadership made history when a Congressional Act restoring the Menominee Tribe’s federal status was signed into law in 1973.

Connie Kade, a graduate of the Master of Social Work program at Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, recently established a scholarship to assist students in obtaining their Master’s degree in social work.  A native of Mercer County, WV, she has resided in Wilmington, DE since her graduation in 1974.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is pleased to announce that Randall Collins will be on campus to present “When Violence Happens, or Not: The Emotional Dynamics of Violent Situations” at 4 p.m. March 29 in White Hall B51.

However, forensic chemistry researchers have had difficulty publishing due to the technical nature of their work. Glen P. Jackson , Ming Hsieh Distinguished Professor of Forensic and Investigative Science at West Virginia University, has changed that.

West Virginia University Associate Professor Rachel Stein has been elected vice president of the North Central Sociological Association. The NCSA is a regional sociology association including: Eastern Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ontario, Canada.
