WVU alumna earns Fulbright scholarship

An Eberly College alumna with a passion for storytelling and exploring cultural similarities between Appalachia and the Arab world is the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright scholarship. 

Clara Haizlett of Bethany is one of approximately 2,200 college students and recent graduates selected to participate in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program.

Thirty-seven graduates were inducted as lifelong members into the WVU Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, a national honor society that recognizes outstanding achievement in the liberal arts and sciences and champions freedom of thought.

WVU linguists sound out how intensity and duration of speech shape pronunciation, rethinking language learning

In prior research, Jonah Katz, associate professor in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, had observed unusual patterns for consonants between vowels across “language after language.” Katz’s observations led him to question what most linguists believe: that these aspects of speech are learned by internalizing abstract rules about how to deal with, say, a “t” sound when it is between vowels within a word, as opposed to when it starts or ends a word.

Twenty undergraduate students from across the University to receive the competitive national award funded by the U.S. State Department to travel abroad without financial constraints. Twelve of those 20 students are studying in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

The English Language Learning Institute (ELLI) in Eberly’s Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics will host approximately 40 Fulbright Scholarship grantees on WVU’s campus for six weeks during Summer 2023. The program will prepare the Fulbright grantees for the linguistic and cultural realities of graduate study in the United States. It will offer academic coursework coupled with workshops, a mentoring program and co-curricular activities created to highlight West Virginia culture, history, and nature.
