2019 WVU Foundation Outstanding Teachers

WVU recognizes three Eberly College faculty members as Foundation Outstanding Teachers for 2019

Six West Virginia University faculty members have been recognized with the University’s 2019 Foundation Award for Outstanding Teaching, which honors exceptional professors who go above and beyond to inspire their students. This year’s honorees are:

 Five West Virginia University women have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to teach English abroad next year. 

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program. Recipients are given a stipend to study, teach or conduct research while increasing mutual understanding between Americans and people of other countries. This new cohort makes 64 Fulbright scholars for West Virginia University.

All the winners are from West Virginia. The 2019-20 scholars are: 

Jana El-Khatib from Hurricane
Kaley Hensley from Chapmanville
Karen Laska from Wheeling
Jordan Miller from Wheeling
Constantia Rhinehart from Elkins

Two West Virginia University Honors College students will have an intensive cultural experience this summer as recipients of the highly competitive U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship.

 Four exceptional faculty members at West Virginia University have been named 2018-2019 Benedum Distinguished Scholars in recognition of the high caliber of their research and scholarly activity:

• Duncan Lorimer, professor of Physics and Astronomy and associate dean for research, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences

• Peter Schaeffer, professor of Resource Economics and Management, Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design

• Bernard Schreurs, professor of Neuroscience in the School of Medicine and director, West Virginia Alzheimer’s Disease Registry

• Janice Spleth, professor of French, department of World Literatures, Languages and Linguistics, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences

WVU’s Intensive English Program to return to Eberly College

As a result of discussions between the Office of Global Affairs, the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics and the Office of the Provost, West Virginia University’s Intensive English Program will return to its original home in the Eberly College.

Looking back on her career at West Virginia University, Elizabeth Young, a Charleston, West Virginia, native reflects on memories of her adventures competing on the rowing team, walking through the snow blanketed campus and the lifelong friendships she created along the way.

Her passion for history led her to double major in history and geography and obtain a minor in French. In summer 2018, the Gilman Scholarship sent Young on a four-week study abroad trip to Montpellier, France, where she was able to practice her French language speaking skills.
