Graduate or professional school is a significant investment in your future.

Whether you’re considering a master’s degree, doctoral program, medical school, law school, or another professional program, planning ahead can help you submit a stronger application and reduce stress.

Is graduate school right for you?

  • Consider your long-term career goals and whether an advanced degree is required or beneficial.
  • Talk with faculty, professionals, alumni, and Career Development about your options.
  • Research careers before committing to a graduate program.

Create your timeline

  • Begin researching programs 12–18 months before your intended start date.
  • Track application, financial aid, scholarship, and entrance exam deadlines.
  • Request transcripts and recommendation letters well in advance.

Research programs

  • Compare curriculum, faculty expertise, research opportunities, internships, outcomes, location, cost, and funding.
  • Attend graduate school fairs and information sessions.

Build a strong application

Personal statement

  • Tell your story authentically.
  • Explain why you are pursuing graduate study and why you are a good fit.
  • Highlight coursework, research, internships, leadership, and career goals.
