Comeback Stories
Hear from students who were on academic probation before and made that setback their comeback, just as you can. Watch all five stories and read some of their advice below.
Aiyana-Mei's Comeback Story
"Just keep your head up high, the support system will help you, your confidence in your own self will help you."
Isaac's Comeback Story
"The main advice I can give is that this may be a low right now, but you’re not stuck there. Because it’s a low, that means there’s highs to come and you just have to keep moving forward."
Shannon's Comeback Story
"Please do not beat yourself up over bad grades. You are more than that and you’re
valuable and you’re worthy to be here."
Cynthia's Comeback Story
"College is where you’re supposed to find yourself, figure out what you’re supposed to do, and even if you change your major, it doesn’t mean you’re failing at anything."
Hanna's Comeback Story
"Some advice I would give to students who are beginning their academic recovery would be to stay calm and know that you’re not alone. A lot of people have trouble their freshman year of college as it’s a big step from high school."
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I on "probation"?
You are on probation because your GPA is below a 2.0. This could be for any number of reasons, from lack of study habits to not finding your “fit.” We’d like to provide you guidance to get back on track so you can continue being a Mountaineer. We’ve worked with lots of students who have been in your situation. You are in good hands, but it will take hard work and focus on your part.
What am I required to do as a probation student?
You are required to show up, work hard, and make positive changes. Sounds easy, right? It will be more challenging than you think. You will enroll in ARSC 293A (Arts and Sciences in the Classroom) to help you develop skills needed for success like grit and growth mindset, effective metacognitive study strategies, and time management plans. You will also have two Academic Coaching meetings during the semester to further support your personal and academic growth.
What is MYA?
Mid-Year Academy (MYA) is a program to help probationary students get back on track. We are here to support you through this probation process! Follow these steps to ensure that you start spring semester on the right foot.
- Step 1: Watch the videos shared above.
- Step 2: Meet with your adviser to adjust your schedule and add ARSC 293A. (Your adviser will contact you via mix email to set up an appointment.)
- Step 3: After meeting with your adviser, meet with an academic coach to discuss the terms of your probation and review and sign your probation contract. (Your academic coach will contact you via mix email to set up an appointment.)
- Step 4: Start spring semester with a growth mindset!
How do I get off probation?
To get back into “Good Standing,” you need to earn a 2.0 Cumulative GPA. Your adviser will work with you to schedule courses that will maximize your chances. Along with your adviser, you will determine the best course of action moving forward, whether it be repeating coursework in which you previously earned a D or F or perhaps a change of major.
What if I don't reach a 2.0?
Students on academic probation who remain on probation after their second semester have a third semester to get back in good standing. If they don’t earn a 2.0 cumulative GPA by the end of their third semester of probation, they will be suspended for 12 months. If you have completed the probation program and you’ve experienced extenuating circumstances, you may appeal your suspension. You may also take winter or summer courses, and if you reach a 2.0 at the end of winter or summer session you may continue taking classes in the fall.
What if I don't complete the probation program?
If you didn’t complete the probation program and you are suspended, you will not be eligible for a suspension appeal. The program is designed to assist you – make the most of it by engaging in the process and mastering your habits of mind!
Will I be able to keep my financial aid and scholarships?
Your aid is tied to your academic performance. While each scholarship is unique, our institutional scholarships all require 30 credits per academic year (this includes summer session) along with a GPA requirement (2.75 – refer to your award letter for more details). Financial Aid requires students to have a 2.0 GPA and a 67% completion rate (earned credit / attempted credit). Work closely with your adviser to determine what you will need to do to maintain your aid.
