English Language Learning Institute to host Fulbright Scholarship grantees for six weeks during Summer 2023

The English Language Learning Institute (ELLI) in Eberly’s Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics will host approximately 40 Fulbright Scholarship grantees on WVU’s campus for six weeks during Summer 2023.

The Fulbright Pre-Academic Program will prepare the grantees for the linguistic and cultural realities of graduate study in the United States. It will offer academic coursework coupled with workshops, a mentoring program and co-curricular activities created to highlight West Virginia culture, history, and nature.

Students will travel to Morgantown from more than 20 countries, including Bangladesh, Mozambique, Belarus, Rwanda, Guinea, Iraq, Vietnam, Kosovo and Georgia. After their time at WVU, they will be placed across the United States at colleges and universities like Colorado State University, Kent State University, University of Missouri, Syracuse University, Loyola University, Tulane University and others.

The program is made possible by a $400,000 Fulbright Pre-Academic Program Grant from the U.S. Department of State in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Amy Thompson, Chair of the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics and Woodburn Professor of Applied Linguistics, and Kristen Williams, Teaching Instructor in the Intensive English Program led the grant proposal team.

“Receiving this prestigious grant helps to further promote the excellent work that the English Language Learning Institute (ELLI) in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics does on behalf of WVU,” Thompson said. “As the Fulbright students we host complete their graduate programs and embark on their career paths, they will forever remember WVU as the start of their journey in the U.S.”

Also on the team were World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics faculty Susan Braidi, Livia Cascao, Tracy Dingess, Lindsei Pereira and Jennifer Simpson Ross.
