Who May Participate
In addition to December 2025 graduates, August 2025 graduates may participate in this ceremony, as well as prospective May 2026 graduates if approved in advance by college administration.
Bachelor degree students
- Students who wish to walk in commencement one term prior to the completion of their degree requirements should contact Andrea Bebell, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies (abebell@mail.wvu.edu), to request permission to participate in the ceremony. (Primarily, only requests from students needing 6 or less credit hours to graduate will be approved.)
Graduate degree students
- Students must have successfully defended their thesis or dissertation prior to the last day to register for commencement. No exceptions can be made to this policy.
- Students in Master’s programs that require coursework only may request permission to participate early in the May commencement ceremony held prior to their graduation semester if there is strong evidence they will successfully complete all remaining requirements (no more than 6 credits) at the end of the summer term. If the program approves, the graduate coordinator must contact the Eberly College Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies with a request on behalf of the student. These requests should be submitted no later than the final day of classes in the semester corresponding to the commencement ceremony
Academic Regalia
A cap and gown is required to participate in commencement and can be purchased online from Herff Jones or in person from the WVU Bookstore (Downtown and Evansdale).
Tassels worn on the caps of Eberly College graduates are color coded by degree earned, as is the trim on hoods for master and doctoral candidates.
- White – BA, BIS, BMDS, MA, MFA, MLS, MPWE, RBA
- Gold – BS, MS
- Citron – BSW, MSW
- Peacock – MPA
- Dark Blue – PHD
Undergraduate students should position tassel on the right side of cap. Graduate students should carry (not wear) their hood to the ceremony and position tassel on left side of cap.
Bachelor degree students who have earned Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) may visit Room 217 Hodges Hall to be presented with their honor card to wear with their graduation gown. A list of other acceptable adornments worn with academic regalia may be viewed on the University's Graduation What to Wear webpage.
