Truth and the Liar Paradox
The liar paradox is a well-known puzzle in the philosophy of logic: Is the sentence, “This sentence is false” true or false? Both answers seem to lead to a contradiction. But calling the liar paradox a puzzle does not do justice to its implications. Thinking through the paradox carefully requires confronting deep questions about the nature of meaning, truth and logic.Join discussion leader Geoff Georgi, associate professor of philosophy, in The Speculation Academy's third conversation of the spring 2019 semester. All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.
The Speculation Academy is an interdisciplinary discussion series devoted to the exploration of new and experimental ideas in a supportive and respectful community of students and faculty. The Speculation Academy is organized by the Department of Philosophy with support from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and the WVU Humanities Center.
