Professor Robert M. Maxon Lifetime Achievement and Academic Legacy African Conference

The Department of History, with support from the Africana Studies Program, is sponsoring a conference devoted to African history in honor of Robert Maxon, who is retiring after a long and distinguished career at WVU. Maxon joined the WVU faculty in 1969 and has played a major role in shaping the field of east African history through his decades of consistently outstanding scholarship and dedicated training of graduate students. Conference organizers and participants include many of Maxon's former doctoral students who have gone on to distinguished academic and administrative careers of their own.

The conference will be held March 29 and 30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place. It will be preceded by the 2019 Callahan Lecture by Maxon's long-time peer and colleague in the field of east African history, Cambridge University Professor John Lonsdale, on Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Mountainlair Student Union's Rhododendron Room.
