Course Placement Charts

We are committed to student success. With this in mind, students are placed into math, chemistry and statistics courses based on prerequisites or placement scores. Students may be placed by ACT Math score, SAT Math score, scores on the ALEKS Math Assessment or successful completion of a prerequisite course.

All First Time Freshmen admits beginning Summer 2023 and beyond are required to take ALEKS as part of their New Student Orientation.

Math Course Details

  • Math 121: Intro Concepts of Mathematics
    • There are no prerequisites or placement scores required to register for Math 121: Intro Concepts of Mathematics. This course does not satisfy the prerequisite for any other math course and is restricted to students that do not need Math 122 or above.
  • Math 122: Quantitative Skills and Reasoning
    • Math 122 is designed for students who have not earned at least a 19 on the ACT or a 510 on the SAT math sections and who need to take math and/or chemistry courses as part of a STEM major.
    • Note: Math 122 is a two-credit preparatory course for Math 124: Algebra with Applications and Math 126: College Algebra and does not fulfill the WVU general education math requirement.
  • Math 124/104: Algebra with Application/Corequisite
    • Note: To register for Math 124 with a corequisite:
      • Students must register at the SAME time for Math 124 and Math 104. Failure to follow these directions during the registration process will result in a prerequisite and test score error.

    • Prerequisite course: C- or higher in Math 122
  • Math 124: Algebra with Applications
    • Note: Specific sections of this course are reserved for students who qualify for Math 124 without the corequisite. Corequisite sections have section numbers that are always in the 100’s. Please do not select these sections. Failure to follow these directions during the registration process will result in a prerequisite and test score error.

  • Math 126/106: College Algebra/Corequisite
