Eberly College Commencement Ceremonies

In May of each year, individual colleges and schools at WVU conduct commencement ceremonies for their graduates. The Eberly College will hold two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 19, 2013—one for doctoral and master’s degree students at 10 a.m. and one for undergraduate students at 2 p.m. A reception will follow each event.
There is no limit on the number of guests a graduate may invite to the ceremony and reception. Students and faculty who plan to participate in commencement are asked to complete the appropriate online registration form by midnight on May 5, 2013.

Per the University Registrar, diplomas will NOT be distributed at commencement ceremonies. Graduates will receive a diploma cover, featuring the seal of the University, as they walk across the stage and receive congratulations from the presiding officer. Diplomas will be mailed to graduates 3-5 weeks after commencement.
Graduate Student Commencement & Hooding Ceremony
Sunday, May 19, 10:00-11:30 a.m., WVU Creative Arts Center
This ceremony is for Eberly College students who completed their doctoral or master’s degree requirements in August 2012 or December 2012, or who will complete their degree requirements in May 2013.
ATTENTION PROSPECTIVE MAY GRADUATES:
To be eligible to participate in this ceremony, you must meet the following deadlines for completing your degree in May 2013.
- January 28 – deadline to submit online application for graduation to the Office of the Registrar.
- April 12 – deadline to submit Shuttle Sheet Request Form to the college’s Office of Graduate Records.
- April 26 – deadline to submit a signed copy of the Blue Shuttle Sheet to the college’s Office of Graduate Records. (Blue Shuttle sheet must be received within 24 hours of your defense.)
- May 3 – ETD must be accepted by Wise Library by May 3 in order to be eligible for May graduation.

Graduate students who meet the above criteria and who plan to participate in the ceremony should complete the online RSVP form by midnight on May 5, 2013.
Instructions for Participants (Grad Student):
The day of the event, graduates are asked to report to the Davis Theatre in the Creative Arts Center between 9:00-9:15 a.m. to pick up their pre-printed Reader Card and meet faculty from their department who will assist graduates in lining up in the proper order for the processional.
Friends and family members of graduates should be seated in the Clay Theatre upon arrival and NOT follow their graduate to the student check-in and line-up areas.
Academic Attire (Grad Student):
A graduation gown, hood, and cap (with the tassel positioned on left side) are required to participate in the ceremony. Official WVU regalia is available at the Downtown and Evansdale WVU Bookstores. Degree candidates should carry (not wear) their hood to the ceremony as their faculty advisor will hood them during the ceremony.
Ceremony Information (Grad Student):
Degree candidates will be lined up for the processional by program, then alphabetically by last name. Marshals will lead the processional and seat faculty and degree candidates. University marshals will cue degree candidates when it is time for them to rise and approach the stage for recognition. Degree candidates will be hooded by their advisor or a designated faculty member prior to receiving diploma cover and handshake from the dean and the presiding officer. All degree candidates should return to their seat after exiting the stage and having their photograph taken in front of the WVU banner. After the last graduate has been recognized and degrees are conferred by the presiding officer, all in attendance will be invited to join in the singing of our alma mater. The ceremony will conclude with an orderly recession.

Graduates with disabilities should contact their disability services counselor to make arrangements for accommodations. Special seating is available for guests with physical limitations, as well as guests requiring the services of interpreters. Photography (Grad Student):
Grad Images will be at the event to take several candid photographs of each graduate. Since photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to remain in their seats and enjoy the ceremony. All students will receive digital proofs and order card via email within 5-7 days following the ceremony.
Printed Program (Grad Student):
Students who applied for May graduation by the January 28 deadline date will be listed in the ceremony program. August 2012 and December 2012 graduates will also be listed in the program.

Undergraduate Student Commencement Ceremony
Sunday, May 19, 2:00-4:30 p.m., WVU Coliseum
This ceremony is for Eberly College students who completed their undergraduate degree requirements in August 2012 or December 2012, or who will complete their degree requirements in May 2013. As a courtesy, prospective August 2013 undergraduate degree candidates may also participate in this ceremony.

Instructions for Participants (Undergrad Student):
The day of the event, students are asked to arrive at the Coliseum between 1:00-1:15 p.m. and report to the 2nd floor lobby above the Red Gate entrance to pick up their pre-printed Reader Card.
When students are handed their Reader Card, they will also be provided with directions to a specific location in the Coliseum that has been designated as a gathering spot for their major. Department faculty will be there to greet students and are responsible for lining up students in alphabetical order for the processional.
Friends and family members of graduates should be seated upon arrival and NOT follow their graduate to the student check-in and line-up areas which are quite congested.
Academic Attire (Undergrad Student):
A graduation gown and cap are required to participate in the ceremony. Official WVU regalia is available at the Downtown and Evansdale WVU Bookstores. Tassles worn on the caps of Arts & Sciences students are color coded by degree being conferred: BA and RBA degree recipients and all MDS majors wear white, BS degree recipients wear yellow, BSW degree recipients wear citron. Prior to the conferring of degrees, the tassle should be positioned on the right side of the cap.

Marshals will cue degree candidates when it is time for them to rise and approach the stage for recognition. Degree candidates will hand their Reader Card to the Commencement Reader and proceed across the stage to receive diploma cover and handshake from the dean and presiding officer. All degree candidates should return to their seat after walking across the stage and having their photograph taken in front of the WVU banner. After the last graduate has been recognized and degrees are conferred by the presiding officer, students will be instructed to move their tassle to the left side of their cap. The alumni charge and singing of the alma mater will follow, and the ceremony will conclude with an orderly recession. Immediately following the ceremony, a reception for graduates and their guests will be held in the Shell Building located adjacent to the Coliseum.
