Apply
Prospective graduate students at West Virginia University are urged to initiate application for admission as early as possible. Follow these steps:
- Apply for admission using the Application for Graduate Admission. This form requires a $50 nonrefundable service fee.
- Have official transcripts sent directly to the WVU Office of Admissions and Records from the institution where you received your baccalaureate degree, as well as all institutions that you attended in the course of undergraduate or graduate study.
- Contact the department that offers your program to determine additional requirements of that program, especially required test scores and references.
For admission consideration, you must: * Hold a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; * Meet the criteria established by your degree program; and * Be accepted by your degree department.
Specific degree programs frequently set higher standards and also may set additional requirements, such as the submission of standardized test scores or letters of recommendation. Most WVU graduate programs require either the graduate record examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores. Some programs require both the general and the appropriate advanced tests before considering an applicant for admission.
All applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency. WVU uses the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as measures of English language proficiency. A score of 213 on the computer-based TOEFL or 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS is required.
