The Center for Women’s Studies at West Virginia University is pleased to announce that our twelfth resident scholar is Anna Clark, PhD, interim director of the Center for Advanced Feminist Studies and the Samuel Russell Chair in the Humanities at the University of Minnesota.

As this year’s participant in the Women’s Studies Residency Program, Clark will visit West Virginia University February 12-15. She will give a public lecture on Monday, February 13 at 7 p.m. in the Blue Ballroom of the Mountainlair. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend the lecture titled, “Love and Desire: Sexuality and Individuality in Victorian Britain.”.

“The Women’s Studies Residency is a great opportunity to invite internationally prominent scholars and activists in the field of women’s and gender studies to campus,” said Ann Oberhauser, director of the Center for Women’s Studies. “We look forward to sharing Dr. Clark’s expertise in women’s history and the history of sexuality with students, faculty and community members during her visit to campus in February.”

Anna Clark has authored four books including “Desire: A History of European Sexuality,” and “Scandal: The Sexual Politics of the British Constitution.” She also edited the Journal of British Studies from 2005-2010. She earned degrees in history from Harvard, the University of Essex and Rutgers University. She specializes in the history of women and sexuality, Irish history and the British Empire. Her current project explores issues relating to engendering the state and criminal law in 19th century British imperial history

The Women’s Studies Residency Program began in 1999 in honor of Dr. Judith Gold Stitzel, the founding director of the Center for Women’s Studies. Each year the Center hosts a scholar who is involved in women’s and gender studies. Residents visit campus for three to five days to participate in classes and various gatherings with students, faculty and staff.

The Center for Women’s Studies supports teaching, research and advocacy that is based on feminist perspectives and centered on analyses of gender and its intersection with race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, age and ability.
