Eberly Recipients
Eberly College Alumni Award
The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences established this recognition to bring to the attention of the campus, the community, and the nation the value and importance of an arts and sciences education. The award honors Eberly alumni whose lives reflect the commitment and excitement which broadly educated arts and sciences people bring to their civic leadership or social welfare activities, professional or business life, and intellectual or cultural pursuits.
Who can nominate an individual for this award?
Nominations may be received from any department or program within the College, from any faculty or staff, from Advisory Board members, and from alumni and friends of the College. Although nominations may be received at any time, an official call for nominations will go out at the beginning of each academic year.
How can I nominate someone?
Send your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail along with the name and address of the nominee and a statement of one or two pages explaining why the person should be recognized to Bonnie.Fisher@mail.wvu.edu.
Appropriate supporting material such as press releases, resumes, and other letters of support will be welcomed.
Recommendations as to recipients will be made by the Office of the Dean after consultation with the Dean’s Advisory Committee, a standing College committee composed of faculty.
The College’s Advisory Board will approve recommendations at its semi-annual meetings.
Who is eligible to receive the award?
The purpose of such recognition is to acknowledge and celebrate living Eberly College alumni, regardless of major or degree level, who are making important contributions to their community or field, who demonstrate the value of life-long leaming, and whose lives, in one way or another, reflect the values and diversity of a liberal arts and sciences education.
These values include:
- full development of a person as an individual and as a member of society,
- importance of knowledge and truth-seeking as characteristics of the educated citizen, and
- nurturing of self-appraisal, open-mindedness, respect for others, service to others, and an understanding of one’s ethical obligations.
Current WVU faculty and administrators, as well as current members of the College’s Advisory Board, are not eligible for this recognition.
The recognition will not be contingent on a person’s giving record, or potential for giving.
How many awards are given annually?
No more than six awards will be given in one academic year.
When are the awards made?
Recognition is possible at any Eberly College special event, including Homecoming, Certificate of Achievement Ceremony, Weekend of Honors, Anniversary Reception, or Commencement. The recipient must be able to attend one of the College’s functions to receive the recognition in person. Presentations, whenever possible, will include the participation of at least one Eberly College Advisory Board member.
How are recipients recognized?
To insure permanent recognition, a plaque with the names of recipients will be mounted in Woodburn Hall. There will also be a gift commemorating the award from the College for each recipient.
